Physical and mental well being directly impacts physical and mental well being of students… their productivity and class room outcomes. If you are able to empower learners, it will create a healthy society. So, it needs to be stressed more where sound balance of healthy mind and healthy body is required in education (exchange of knowledge) as profession. Teaching is a noble profession where consistent focus on overall well being and holistic development is required.

Burnout is obviously there in teaching as you have to be consistently on you toes. To create an engaging learning experience, you as a teacher need to be involved whole heartedly in a limited time frame. Teachers can use various audio-visual tool, animation, art and craft, excursions, education trips to create a joyful environment along with learning.

It results in a more satisfying outcome for both teachers and students as it is a mentally relaxing environment with lots of positivity. It is a free exchange of knowledge with correct perspective. To ensure that work is done on time, teachers can set milestones for students without creating a tensed environment. Emotions of teacher impacts mental status/ emotions of students. Stress hormone is released in body whenever there are tense environments in class room.

Lot of patience is required in teaching profession. So, an emotionally disturbed teacher will impair the learning environment. Each student has a different set of skills. It is not easy to strike out a balance in your teaching methodology for different students. At the end, teacher is held accountable to progress of students. Society has to create teaching systems that reduces stress and burden for teachers as well as students.

Apart from mental well-being, physical fitness also plays a key role for building a conducive environment and strengthens their mental status. Physical activity, sports and co-curricular activities help them cope with stress, anxiety and depression. As a teacher, you can engage your kids in club or sports activity. It will not only equip them with skills but also help them reduce every day’s stress levels.

Physical activity also develops team spirit, leadership, hard work, perseverance, practising, social skills and setting goals. Some teachers think sports as detractors but its opposite is true. Students engaged in sports activities often achieve better results academically. They have life skills needed in and out of class-room. You can make your own club in school or college with handful of students to start with!

Teachers can initiate open discussions in class-room to discuss students’ problems and help them recognise their mental and physical health issues. She can equip them with resources or workshops/programs with trained faculty for help. Even school/college can organize these awareness programs from time to time.

For teachers, useful tip is to have a growth mindset, be open for learning or improvements. Also build up your emotional resilience and focus on forgiveness, kindness and gratitude. Take a good night sleep. Reward yourself and build a strong network around you of people with similar professions. It will lead to healthy mind, body and soul!
